Ice Maker Not Working? Safe Checks for Samsung, LG and Other Fridges
Common causes are the ice maker being switched off, a blocked bail arm or sensor, a clogged or overdue water filter, a frozen fill tube, or a closed water supply valve behind the fridge.
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before touching anything inside, and shut off the water or gas supply where it applies. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
Likely causes
- Ice maker switched off
- Bail arm or sensor blocked
- Clogged or overdue water filter
- Ice buildup in the ice maker or fill tube
- Water supply valve closed
Safe owner checks
- Confirm the ice maker is switched on and the bail arm or sensor is not blocked.
- Check that the water filter is not clogged or overdue. GE says to change it about every 6 months.
- Look for ice buildup in the ice maker or fill tube; let it thaw if frozen.
- Make sure the water supply valve behind the fridge is open.
- Use the reset or test button as your owner's manual describes.
When to call a pro
- No ice after the checks above
- The fill tube keeps freezing
- Water leaks near the ice maker
Repair or replace?
An ice maker module or water valve is usually a repair, not a reason to replace the fridge.
Repair cost
Call for a quote. Costs depend on the brand, the model, the part and the shop. Ask for any diagnostic or trip fee and a written quote after diagnosis.
