How often to inspect and pump

EPA says the average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with float switches, pumps or other mechanical parts should generally be inspected once a year. (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)

EPA says to pump the tank if the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the outlet, the top of the sludge is within 12 inches of the outlet, or sludge and scum are more than 25 percent of the liquid depth. Keep the service reports. (source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
