Ohio car repair rules come from the Attorney General's motor vehicle repair rule and the Ohio lemon law in Revised Code Chapter 1345.
What Ohio rules say
- When a repair is expected to cost more than $50 and you deal with the shop in person, the shop must let you choose a written estimate, an oral estimate or no estimate. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- The required notice says your bill will not be more than ten percent over the estimate unless you approve a larger amount before the repairs are finished. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- A shop may not charge for any repair or service you did not authorize. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- Before starting, the shop must tell you if parts it will use are remanufactured, rebuilt or used. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- The shop must hand back replaced parts unless they are being rebuilt, sold or returned to the manufacturer under a warranty and you were told so in advance. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- The shop must disclose at first contact how it will charge for towing, if it will tow the car. (source: Ohio Administrative Code)
- The lemon law covers problems reported within the first year or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first. (source: Ohio Revised Code)
- A reasonable number of repair tries is presumed after three or more attempts on the same problem, 30 or more calendar days in the shop, or eight or more attempts on any problems. (source: Ohio Revised Code)
- One failed repair attempt is enough for a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. (source: Ohio Revised Code)
- To ask for a refund or replacement, the Attorney General says to send a certified letter to the manufacturer. (source: Ohio Attorney General)
- A lemon law suit must be filed within five years of the original delivery of the vehicle. (source: Ohio Revised Code)
